Grout Renew

frequently asked questions

color seal

  • Why is your color sealant better than standard clear grout sealant?

Standard clear grout sealant works well for resisting oil and water based spills, but it offers no color correction and does not repel dirt.  The real world life expectancy is about 1-2 years.  Our color sealant and top coat provides color correction, it will fix oil based grout stains, and our top coat sealant will repel the dirt.  Our sealant will ease maintenance, so you no longer have to scrub grout.  Our life expectancy for floor tile and grout is about 10 years if cleaned properly.

  • How do I get the most life out of my color sealant?

All grout sealants will be sensitive to abrasive cleaners, our color sealant is no different.  We recommend avoiding harsh cleaners, like acid and citrus based cleaners, and abrasive cleaners like Ajax or Comet.  Typically, a neutral ph all purpose cleaner designed for natural stone is what is recommended.  If you are a customer, we will provide you with a product recommendation list.

  • After the grout has been color sealed, do I still have to scrub my grout?

Because we use a 2 step grout sealant, no soil will penetrate through the clear topical coating.  This means you no longer have to scrub the dirt out of grout.  We recommend misting the area with a cleaning solution, and then wipe with a cotton or microfiber towel–for floors we recommend using a microfiber bonnet.  If you still feel it is necessary to scrub grout, then we would recommend a soft bristle brush.

Shower Tile and Grout Restoration

  • I have grout missing on my shower pan. Will this cause a problem?

Water in your shower should travel through the top of the drain on your pan.  If water travels below the tile, and through the shower drain “weep holes”, this will eventually cause the weep holes to clog due to soaps, shampoos, conditioners, calcium and minerals.  When the weep holes become clogged, your shower pan will have high moisture which leads to mold in grout.  Moisture can also wick over the curb and into adjacent wall.

  • I have mold growing in my shower. Is that normal?

Mold and mildew grow in high moisture, dark, and dirty environments.  If you have a mold problem in your shower, and you have to rely on harsh cleaners like bleach and water, tilex, and clorox—chances are there is a problem with your shower.  The most common problem we find in showers with a tile floor is the weep drain.  90% of the showers we encounter have clogged weep holes in the shower drain.  That means that every time your shower is used, water will migrate through the grout and becomes trapped below the tile.  It can sit in the mortar bed below the tile for a month or more, because the weep holes will not allow the moisture to migrate back into the drain.  We provide a service to clear the weep holes so your shower can drain properly, and your mold problem will go away.

  • I had a carpet cleaning company try to clean my shower, but it doesn't look much improved. How can you do better?

While many carpet cleaners try their best to clean a shower, there is alot of work involved with shower cleaning and restoration.  It takes about 7 steps for us to restore a shower, which can be a 1-2 day process depending upon how large your shower is.  The end result of our shower restoration process should make you feel like you’re stepping into a new shower again.

  • I have colored grout in my shower, but most of it has turned white. Can you fix that?

Yes we can.  Colored shower grout can be difficult to maintain, especially when there is minerals and bleach in the water, and harsh cleaners like acid and bleach will strip the color from the grout.  However, this can be fixed.  With our clean, color and seal process, we can color match and restore the grout to its original color again.

Floor Tile and Grout

  • I had the franchise tile and grout guys clean my floor, but it doesn't look much improved. Can you do better?

Yes.  Because floor grout is a sponge soaking up fats, oils, greases, petroleums, it is bound to get stained.  Just like when a car drips oil on your driveway, and the stain is now permanent, floor grout is no different.  The solution to this problem is to have the grout color sealed.  Just like when you may have a decorative stain applied to your driveway, we can also color seal or “stain” the grout back to its original color.

  • I had my grout color sealed by the franchise guys, but its now starting to flake off. How is your method better?

While some companies use a thick colored paint on grout which could eventually flake off, we use a thin penetrating colorant that actually soaks in and gets absorbed into the grout.  This reduces the likelihood that our product will flake off.  We also apply a second clear topical coating, just like how you would apply wax, or a clear coat to your car.  This also adds durability and greater life out of our sealant.  Lastly, before we apply a sealant, we make sure the grout is free of soil, especially oils, fats, and soaps, therefore adding to the life expectancy of the sealant.

  • I have a couple of loose tiles on my floor. Can you fix this?

Yes we can.  We have a process of injecting adhesive under the tile, therefore bonding the tile back to the floor.  We finish the job with grout repairs and sealing.

Countertop Tile and Grout

  • I have broken grout on my backsplash counter joint. Why does that happen?

Grout will break with the slightest of movement, it only takes about 1/16th of an inch.  Because homes will naturally move and settle, we typically see grout failure between a vertical and horizontal surface.  This is called a maintenance joint.  There is a longer lasting solution to this problem.  We use a colored flexible latex acrylic with added sand, so it looks just like grout, but will allow flexibility and movement to occur without failing.

  • The grout around my kitchen sink is beginning to wash out, is there a fix for this?

Yes there is.  We find that grout around a kitchen sink can be subjected to lots of wear and tear, including heavy moisture, detergents, bleaches, acids, etc.  Over time, grout will become etched, dry, and brittle.  Depending upon your application, we can regrout around the sink, or perhaps use a sealant that will be more chemical or water resistant.  We can explore your options when we arrive.

  • I have white tile and white grout on my bathroom vanity counter, and it is stained from makeup. Can you fix this?

Yes we can.  We find that oil based makeup can soak deeply into grout, causing the grout to become stained.  We have several options to correct this, including degreasing the grout, etching grout, some grout may need replacement, and lastly our color seal process will correct any light discoloration, restoring color uniformity to your counter top.
